Murphy was granted his release by the Red Sox on Monday, Rob Bradford reports.
After not making the major league roster, Murphy did not want to spend another season in the minor leagues and instead has chosen to enter free agency once more. He could provide a nice left-handed bat off the bench for some teams, but if he is unable to find a team, there's a good chance that he'll retire.
