Cooney (forearm) was optioned to Triple-A Columbus as part of the Tribe's first round of spring cuts.
The move was just a formality, as the organization's No. 19 prospect is slated to miss another couple of months while recovering from a forearm injury. Cooney had shoulder surgery in the offseason, and this latest ailment is definitely another red flag for the former third-round pick. The left-hander has shown the promise of becoming a big-league starter, but Cooney will need a healthy campaign in the minors before getting bumped up. If anything, he could be in line for a late-season call-up with a chance at a spot start or two.
