  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Won't return when eligible

Smith (hand) will not be reinstated from the injured list once he's eligible to return Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

Manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that Smith has resumed catching bullpen sessions but hasn't yet progressed to hitting or throwing. With so many hurdles to clear and only three days remaining before he can come off the IL, it makes sense that the Dodgers plan to keep him on the shelf for a more-than-minimum stay. In the meantime, Dalton Rushing and Ben Rortvedt will continue to start behind the plate for Los Angeles.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Returning Wednesday

Realmuto (illness) will start at catcher and bat fourth Wednesday against the Dodgers, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

After sitting out Tuesday's contest due to an illness, Realmuto seems to be feeling well enough to return to the starting nine Wednesday. The 34-year-old backstop has been in a rough patch at the plate recently, slashing .233/.327/.326 across 52 plate appearances since the start of September.

  • Joey Bart C | PIT

Pirates' Joey Bart: Homers in loss

Bart went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Cubs.

Bart got Pittsburgh on the board in the first inning with a two-out, 419-foot blast off Matthew Boyd, his third homer of the year and his first in 19 games. Bart had gone just 1-for-14 in his last seven contests coming into Wednesday. Overall, he's batting .240 with a .671 OPS, 26 RBI and 19 runs scored across 317 plate appearances this season.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Resting Wednesday

Fermin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.

He'll receive a breather after starting behind the dish the past two games while going 3-for-7 with a home run and two RBI. Elias Diaz will fill in for Fermin at catcher Wednesday.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Good to go after HBP

Alvarez (triceps) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Alvarez was lifted for a pinch runner in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 8-3 win after he was plunked by a Bradgley Rodriguez 100-mph fastball during his fourth and final plate appearance. Though Alvarez -- who has been playing through a broken pinkie finger on his left hand and a torn UCL in his right thumb -- has now been hit on the left arm by a pitch three times in the last three weeks, he'll be able to fight through any lingering soreness and step back in behind the dish Wednesday.

  • Mets' Hayden Senger: Back to minors

The Mets optioned Senger to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Francisco Alvarez (triceps) was cleared to play Wednesday and Luis Torrens (forearm) is back from the injured list, so the Mets no longer had room on the active roster for Senger. The 28-year-old Senger has produced a .415 OPS in 33 games with the Mets in 2025.

  • Luis Torrens DH | NYM

Mets' Luis Torrens: Back on active roster

The Mets activated Torrens (forearm) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Torrens needed only a minimum stay on the IL with a right forearm contusion. Francisco Alvarez (triceps) is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres after exiting Tuesday's 8-3 win, so Torrens will serve as the team's backup catcher.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Diamondbacks' James McCann: Playing time picking up

McCann will start at catcher and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Giants.

McCann will crack the lineup for the third time in four games after going 3-for-8 with two home runs and six RBI in his previous two starts. So long as he's swinging a hot bat, McCann will likely be able to play fairly regularly at catcher, clearing the way for Gabriel Moreno to see more time at designated hitter.

  • Pedro Pages C | STL

Cardinals' Pedro Pages: Sitting out afternoon game

Pages is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Reds.

Pages had a pair of hits in Tuesday's win over the Reds but will grab a seat for Wednesday's series finale. Jimmy Crooks will start at catcher and bat seventh in the rubber match.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Sitting out matinee

Stephenson is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in St. Louis.

Stephenson started at catcher in the first two games of the series, so he'll get a breather for Wednesday's matinee. Jose Trevino will fill in behind the dish and bat eighth for the Reds.
