The road to the Kentucky Derby goes through Northern California on Saturday when the starting gate opens in the 2022 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. The ungraded stakes race has drawn a field of 11 mostly fringe Kentucky Derby hopefuls from the West Coast. The Doug O'Neill-trained Mackinnon, who has lost back-to-back races, is listed as the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the 2022 El Camino Real Derby odds, while the Bob Baffert-trained Blackadder is getting 7-2 odds in the 2022 El Camino Real Derby field. The winner of Saturday's race will earn 10 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby, but Blackadder is ineligible to earn points because of Baffert's suspension from Churchill Downs.

One surprise: Yu is bullish on the chances of Dr Pescado, even though he is one of the longest shots in the field at 15-1. A son of Fullbridled, Dr Pescado has raced all four times at Golden Gate. He has won twice, including a victory in the Golden Nugget Stakes two starts ago.
In a field that doesn't have much speed, Dr Pescado should find himself forwardly placed, if not on the lead. "Could he possibly head to the front and try to steal the race?" Yu told SportsLine. Yu is using Dr Pescado prominently in her wagers.
