WATCH: Golfers are dunking, holing out all over the place at 2016 U.S. Open
Golfers on Friday must have been inspired by LeBron James and Game 6 of the NBA Finals with all the dunks they were dropping at Oakmont
OAKMONT, Pa. -- Oakmont isn't what we thought after the first few days of the U.S. Open. Birdies were supposed to be come by, but instead we've had them by the bucketful. Greens were supposed to be impossible to stop your golf ball on, but instead golfers have been sticking shots all over the place.
Matthew Fitzpatrick and Matt Marshall each dunked shots in the first round at the 116th U.S. Open. Both were pretty spectacular. Marshall, who hadn't even been playing golf in the months before qualifying for this tournament in Washington, dunked one on the 4th hole for birdie. Marshall, who is in the winemaking business, played his first round in just 1 over par.
Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, is a star. The 21-year-old Englishman has two wins on the European Tour and is primed to be a stud on this year's European Ryder Cup team. He dunked his sand shot for birdie on the par-4 2nd hole during Thursday's first round. Here's a look at that.

Scoring was a lot better than most people thought it would be (including me). After just eight rounds were played in the 60s in 2007 for the entire tournament, 11 total were played in the 60s in the first round alone this year. Most of that had to do with the fact that the 2.3 inches of rain Oakmont received softened the greens and fairways. Dropping chips like this from long distances didn't hurt either.
Get it in the hole.
