Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter is nearing his return. The club has announced he'll make a rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Memphis.
Carpenter, 38, already made one rehab appearance when he started for Double-A Springfield on Monday. He went 2 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking two.
Carpenter has been out all of the 2013 season due to damage in his right shoulder, neck and arm area. The concerns during spring training prompted the Cardinals to call a press conference that felt tantamount to a retirement presser. But Carpenter has steadily made progress -- albeit with a few setbacks along the way -- on a return for this season.
The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner is 144-94 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in his career. He's a three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion.
The Cardinals have dealt with injury issues to their starting rotation throughout the season but have said all along that they aren't counting on Carpenter's return -- instead viewing it as a bonus if he returns.
