New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is tasked with appointing someone to take the U.S. Senate seat of the recently deceased Frank Lautenberg. Among the seriously interested candidates for that appointment is former major-league pitcher and current Yankees and MLB Network broadcaster Al Leiter.

"Who wouldn’t be interested if the governor of your state for whatever reason of their due process thought [you were] worthy, in their opinion?" Leiter recently told Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com. "So, yeah. I would be interested."

As Charles Curtis of NJ.com notes, Leiter pondered a run for the Senate in 2007, and he has close ties to Gov. Christie, as he served as part of the transition team after Christie's election and later received a pair of political appointments.

Leiter, 47, is a native of Toms River, N.J. Across parts of 19 major-league seasons that included stints with both the Yankees and Mets, Leiter went 162-132 with a 3.80 ERA (112 ERA+).
