Mike Piazza's 9/11 Mets jersey goes for $365K, will be publicly displayed
After some level of controversy, the Mike Piazza 9/11 jersey will be in a rotating display between the 9/11 Memorial Museum, Citi Field and the Baseball Hall of Fame.
A few weeks ago, word came that Hall of Fame inductee Mike Piazza was at odds with the Mets over his "9/11 jersey" being up for auction. It's the actual jersey that Piazza wore in the Mets' first game after the Sept. 11 tragedy and hit a walk-off homer. It's also autographed. Here it is, via Goldin Auctions:

The problem is that the Mets sold the jersey three years ago and it recently went up for auction via Goldin Auctions. Piazza was disappointed with the Mets, specifically the Wilpon family (ownership).
However, Piazza might be a little relieved to hear what went down in the auction.
Via a Goldin Auctions press release:
Mike Piazza's post-9/11 home run jersey will have a permanent home in New York. A trio of Mets fans, including Anthony Scaramucci founder and managing partner of SkyBridge Capital, Tony Lauto a retired Wall Street executive and an anonymous third party signed an agreement today to purchase the jersey in a private sale from Goldin Auctions for a record price of $365,000.

Additionally, as a stipulation of the private sale set forth by Goldin Auctions, the buyers have agreed to display the jersey in a rotating display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown; the 9/11 Memorial Museum in Lower Manhattan, and at Citi Field.
Goldin Auctions had actually originally had a final auction date of April 30, but instead -- due to the unique circumstances of this particular item, put it up for a private sale on April 15.
"Since our inception, we have never removed any of the 20,000 items we have listed in an auction for private sale. However due to the historical significance of this item, and its emotional ties to the city of New York we made an exception," said Ken Goldin, CEO of Goldin Auctions, in a statement. "We commend the buyers for stepping forward and offering our consignor fair market value and keeping this historic piece of memorabilia in New York for the public to enjoy."
The jersey first hit the 9/11 Memorial Museum on Monday, too (CBS New York has the details). It will be at Citi Field when Piazza's number is retired this summer and then it will be at the Hall of Fame when Piazza is officially enshrined on July 24.
So, in all, it would appear all is well that ends well.
