The Red Sox have acquired outfielder Mike Carp from the Mariners for a player to be named later, the team has announced.

The 26-year-old lefty was designated for assignment on Feb. 12, giving the Mariners 10 days to either trade him, release him or send him back to the minors. Carp hit .213/.312/.341 in 189 plate appearances while struggling with shoulder issues last season.

The Red Sox view Carp as an upgrade over their other left-handed options in the outfield and at first base. In 608 career plate appearances, Carp has hit .255/.327/.413.

In order to make room for Carp on the 40-man roster, the team has moving outfielder Ryan Kalish to the 60-day disabled list. Kalish had surgery in November to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.
