The Oakland Athletics activated starter Brett Anderson off the 60-day disabled list, optioned starter Dan Straily and designated catcher Anthony Recker for assignment, Jane Lee of MLB.com reported Monday.

Anderson is scheduled to start Tuesday, his first start since June 5, 2011. He underwent Tommy John surgery that July, continuing a history of elbow injuries that caused two DL stints in 2010 as well. Anderson has solid career numbers -- a 3.66 ERA in 62 starts, good for a 115 ERA+ -- and at just 24 he has time to grow into the hype that surrounded him as he debuted in 2009. Baseball America ranked him as the seventh-best prospect in baseball prior to that season.

Straily made three starts for the Athletics this season, posting a 3.18 ERA with 12 strikeouts against four walks in 17 innings, but he also allowed four home runs. Straily serves as another indicator of the tremendous pitching depth Oakland has displayed in their improbable run towards the postseason.
