Generally speaking, the winning team seldom gets mad at the umpire at the game's conclusion. But then again, nothing about the end of Tuesday night's Washington Nationals-Atlanta Braves game went by convention.

Here's our best try at summing it up: Nationals reliever Shawn Kelley struck out Chase d'Arnaud to end the game -- or seemingly had struck out d'Arnaud to end the game. That's because, despite handshakes and dugout retreats and encroaching groundscrew members and all the stuff that follows a final out, home-plate umpire C.B. Bucknor ruled d'Arnaud had fouled off the pitch in question. Replays, however, showed that d'Arnaud most certainly did not make contact.

The two sides resumed their positions and Kelley again struck out d'Arnaud. This time the K stuck. All the same, Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth was not happy.

You can see the play in question and some of the postgame confrontation here:

Werth ranted after the game, too. Here was his conclusion:

"I'm not even talking about balls and strikes or anything else. It just blows my mind that in a big league baseball game that can actually happen."

You can understand Werth's frustration -- Bucknor has a difficult job, yet this mistake was inexplicable, in part because d'Arnaud himself didn't even sell that he had made contact -- but you do wonder if some of it stems from balls and strikes. After all, here's a look at one of Werth's at-bats earlier in the night:

Bottom line, boy was it not a great night for Bucknor. And boy does this game -- albeit at times unintentionally -- keep you on your toes.
