  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Endures rough 2017

Smith, who wrapped up his 2017 campaign with 1.2 scoreless innings in last Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Rangers, generated an 0-4 record, 6.79 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 55.2 innings in 2017.

The 36-year-old right-hander might be nearing the end of the line if his 2017 performance is any indication. Smith gave up multiple earned runs in 10 of 14 appearances, including eight straight at one point. Smith's ERA was his highest since his rookie 2008 campaign, while his 5.0 K/9 and 2.6 HR/9 were career-worst figures. Moreover, the veteran's numbers could have been even more unsightly, considering he had the benefit of a .244 BABIP allowed.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Allows seven runs in no-decision Monday

Smith allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks across 3.1 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Angels. He struck out three.

Smith was victimized by the long ball in this one, yielding six runs via the home run before his removal in the fourth. He threw just 55 percent of his pitches for strikes and was unable to pitch effectively from behind. Smith could remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season, but he's looked outclassed at this level, allowing 33 earned runs over his last 26.2 innings. He's slated to start during Saturday's double-header against the Astros.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Moved to bullpen

Smith will be removed from the starting rotation and work out of the bullpen moving forward, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

Smith was shelled for seven runs during his Monday start against the Angels and now holds an unsightly 7.11 ERA on the season. He'll presumably work in a long-relief role moving forward, with Daniel Mengden taking his spot in the starting rotation.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Likely to remain in rotation

Smith is likely to remain a part of the starting rotation for the balance of the regular season in the wake of Paul Blackburn's season-ending wrist injury, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

The 36-year-old right-hander is coming off a forgettable month of August (0-3 record, 8.49 ERA over five starts), but Blackburn's injury will apparently afford him an opportunity to make up for it in the final month of the season. A career minor-leaguer, Smith hadn't started a game at the big-league level until doing so on July 8. He's often appeared overmatched after tossing a trio of quality starts to open his current stint with the A's.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Burned by Angels on Tuesday

Smith (0-4) fell to the Angels on Tuesday, getting tagged for seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks over 3.2 innings while striking out only one.

Two of those hits left the yard, marking the third time in Smith's last four starts that he's surrendered multiple homers. With a 6.27 ERA, 26:17 K:BB and 2.5 HR/9 in 47.1 big-league innings, Smith should be far away from any active fantasy rosters ahead of Monday's home rematch with the Angels.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: To start Tuesday

Smith will start Tuesday against the Angels, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

This will likely be a short-term move back to the rotation, as the Athletics indicated they think Smith's future is in the bullpen. That said, they need a temporary replacement for the injured Paul Blackburn (wrist), so Smith will get another chance for now. He owns a brutal 5.56 ERA and has allowed 11 home runs over seven starts, so expect him to go back to the bullpen once Blackburn is ready to return.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Will shift to bullpen

Smith is moving to the bullpen, according to manager Bob Melvin, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

There is a chance that Smith will take the place of Paul Blackburn (wrist) for his projected start against the Angels at the beginning of next week, but the right-hander is set to transition to the bullpen moving forward. He was hit pretty hard during Monday's start against Baltimore, allowing five runs -- four earned -- over 4.1 innings. That outing marked the fourth time in his past five outings that Smith gave up four or more runs. It is not clear as to what role Smith will occupy out of the bullpen, but he could be used in long-relief appearances now that he's out of the starting rotation.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Roughed up in loss to Orioles

Smith (0-3) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on six hits and two walks across 4.1 innings while earning the loss Monday against the Orioles. He struck out three.

Smith struggled with the long ball in this one, allowing three home runs over the fourth and fifth innings. He routinely fell behind, throwing just 56 percent of his pitches for strikes, and was victimized in predictable counts. Smith, who has allowed 20 earned runs over his last 24.2 innings, will need a better showing Sunday against the Rangers to hold his place in the rotation.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Allows three runs in Tuesday's no-decision

Smith allowed three runs on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings during Tuesday's game against the Royals. He struck out three and did not factor into the decision.

Smith allowed three runs in the first inning on a leadoff walk, hit by pitch, Eric Hosmer two-run double and a Melky Cabrera RBI single. He settled down after the bumpy opening frame to retire 14 of his next 15 batters faced before being lifted in the sixth inning with his team clinging to a 4-3 lead. He was denied his first winning decision of the season when Santiago Casilla surrendered a two-run home run to Drew Butera in the eighth inning. Smith will look to grab his first win in his upcoming matchup against the Orioles on Monday.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Surrenders four home runs in loss

Smith (0-2) took the loss Thursday, allowing five earned runs while striking out three batters over 6.0 innings. He surrendered four home runs.

This was Smith's first start since July 29 after a brief stint in the bullpen. He was tagged for seven extra-base hits and gave up back-to-back homers on two separate occasions. The A's lack of rotation depth could afford Smith another start, but it's worth noting that his nine home runs allowed in 34.0 innings might cause manager Bob Melvin to consider other options. As it stands, Smith is lined up to face the Royals on Tuesday.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Will start Thursday

Smith will rejoin the Athletics' starting rotation and start Thursday's game against the Orioles, Joe Stiglich of NBC Sports California reports.

Smith made four starts for the Athletics earlier this season, but was temporarily shifted to the bullpen last week as Daniel Gossett received an opportunity to start. With Gossett being optioned to Triple-A following his outing, Smith will rejoin the rotation for the time being, though he'll also be at risk of losing his spot with a poor performance.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Knocked around in multi-inning stint

Smith gave up four earned runs on five hits and two walks over four innings in Thursday's 11-2 loss to the Giants. He struck out two.

Smith didn't encounter the same level of success Thursday that he'd enjoyed as a starter, and the 416-foot three-run shot he gave up to fellow hurler Ty Blach in the fifth served as the low point of his outing. The 36-year-old was recently moved to the bullpen, where he's valued for his ability to eat up multiple innings. However, manager Bob Melvin has also said that Smith could return to the rotation if a starter struggles, so his role remains in flux for the time being.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Temporarily heading to bullpen

Smith will head to the bullpen for the time being, but he's a candidate to return to the rotation should Daniel Gossett or Jharel Cotton struggle, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The 36-year-old right-hander has surprisingly turned in quality starts in three of his four trips to the mound this season, so it appears he'll be the first man up if manager Bob Melvin feels the need to shake up the rotation. Cotton struggled in his first start off the disabled list Sunday, while Gossett was hit hard by the Twins in his most recent start last Friday.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Gives up four runs in no-decision

Smith allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Twins.

For the first time in four major-league outings, Smith failed to record a quality start. His lack of missed bats finally caught up to him, as the Twins touched up him up for three extra-base hits -- including a home run -- among the seven hits he allowed. Smith's ERA sits at 4.13, and unless he can find more strikeouts (14 through 24 major-league innings), he'll have a hard time doing much better.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Tosses quality start in loss to Blue Jays

Smith (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks across six innings in Monday's loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out two.

Smith allowed a solo home run in the first inning, then saw another pair come around in the fourth on three hits and two walks. It was the third quality start in three tries at the MLB level for the 36-year-old, who only had a handful of relief appearances under his belt over the last seven seasons, but a lack of run support cost him a shot at his first win of the season. Smith's next start has not yet been scheduled, but with a steady string of results under his belt and a 3.32 ERA, he could get the nod during this weekend's series against the Twins.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: To start Monday in Toronto

Smith will start Monday's game in Toronto, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

It was originally thought that Jharel Cotton (finger) would be able to return to the big-league rotation Monday, but he will need another rehab start, so Smith sticks for now. His stay is not unwarranted, as he has a 2.77 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 13 innings across two big-league starts this season. In fact, with Cotton not set to make his next rehab start until Tuesday, Smith appears to be in line to make two starts next week, as Cotton won't be ready to start again until next Sunday. There is some guess work involved there, but in deeper weekly formats, he is interesting, at the very least.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Another quality start Tuesday

Smith didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Rays but gave up just two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out four.

The veteran has made for a rather unlikely effective stopgap for the Athletics while Jharel Cotton (finger) has been sidelined, as he's now turned in a pair of quality starts and generated a solid 2.77 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. Smith had never started a game at the major-league level until taking the hill against the Mariners on July 8, so the results have certainly been pleasantly surprising. However, with Cotton likely to be ready for his next turn in the rotation, Smith appears destined to head back down to Triple-A Nashville, unless manager Bob Melvin opts to retain him for relief help.

  • Athletics' Chris Smith: Will pick up another start Tuesday

Smith will start Tuesday's game against the Rays, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Athletics are likely keeping the fifth spot in the rotation warm for Jharel Cotton (finger), but since Cotton will need to make a rehab start at Triple-A Nashville this week, Smith will stick around in a starting role for a little while longer. The 36-year-old performed adequately in his season debut with the Athletics on July 8 against the Mariners, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk over six innings.
