The Houston Rockets announced on Sunday that starting point guard Kyle Lowry will be out 2-4 weeks with a "bacterial infection."
Reports broke on Friday that Lowry was hospitalized in New York with an illness that included a fever and "abdominal distress" as symptoms.
The Rockets said Sunday that Lowry will be released from the hospital on Tuesday and that he will return to Houston to begin completing "a full course of antibiotic treatments."
Lowry, 25, has had a career-year in 2011-2012, averaging 15.9 points, 7.2 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 35.4 minutes per game.
It goes without saying that this is regrettable timing for the Rockets, who currently sit in the No. 8 spot in the tightly contested Western Conference, with a record of 22-20. Houston is just 3.5 games out of the No. 3 spot and 3.5 games up on the No. 13 seeded Golden State Warriors.
In Lowry's absence, Rockets coach Kevin McHale has started Goran Dragic at the point.
