WATCH: Kevin Garnett enjoys Gino Time, gets standing ovation in Boston
Celtics fans gave Kevin Garnett a standing ovation on Monday night.
With the Minnesota Timberwolves playing for the second straight night, head coach Sam Mitchell opted to rest Kevin Garnett against the Boston Celtics on Monday. This has been the plan with Garnett all season long, as the veteran forward usually rests on the second night of a back-to-back. Even though Garnett didn't play, Boston fans still gave the former Celtics player a standing ovation during his favorite moment of the game, Gino Time.
Whenever Boston is up by double-digits at home and a win looks to be definite, the Celtics play a celebratory video of clips from American Bandstand, a music and dance show that aired from 1956 to 1989. When he played for the Celtics, Garnett loved watched the video and would get excited when a dancing bearded man wearing a shirt that said "Gino Time" would appear in the clip.
With Boston beating Minnesota by double-digits on Monday, the Celtics played the Gino Time video during a timeout with one minute left in the game. And as usual Garnett highly enjoyed watching the clip.
Seeing that Garnett was watching the video, the crowd began to chant "Thank you KG" and gave the future Hall-of-Famer a standing ovation. Garnett saluted the crowd and appeared to be moved to tears by their ovation.
After the game, Garnett talked with reporters about watching Gino Time in his only trip to Boston this season.
From CBS Boston:
“[Gino] was like the cherry on top for me, you know?” said Garnett. “My teammates were looking at me like, ‘What is this?’ I was like, ‘I’ll explain later.’ So thank you for whoever put the Gino on. I know my guys here put it on for me, so I appreciate that.”
“Boston’s always been a special place in my heart and probably always will,” he said. “Tonight, although the outcome wasn’t the way I wanted it to be, it was a great homecoming. It felt really good to be in the building.”
Playing six year in Boston and winning a championship with the Celtics in 2008, Garnett made a huge impact on the franchise and their fans. Clearly, they have also made an impact on Garnett.
