Race for No. 1 overall pick in 2022 Draft: Jaguars in prime position to select first for second year in row
There could be one positive that comes out of a dismal season for Jacksonville

It's been an extremely trying season in Jacksonville, but there may be a silver lining if the Jaguars are able to secure the No. 1 overall pick for a second straight year. While the Lions were the front-runner to secure the top overall pick for most of the season, the Jaguars moved ahead of them after last Sunday's 30-16 loss to the Texans.
The Jaguars clearly need to build more pieces around last year's No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Given their current record, the Jaguars will be in position to do just that in the first round of next year's draft. But unlike last year's draft, the top pick in the upcoming draft is projected to be on the defensive side of the ball. In fact, don't be surprised if the first several picks in the 2022 draft are players who dominated on the defensive side of the ball during their college careers.
Here's a look at the five Week 16 games that could determine the No. 1 overall pick, along with the current top of the draft order. Click here to check out which player our CBS Sports NFL Draft analysts currently have your team taking in the first round of the upcoming draft.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-12)
2. Detroit Lions (2-11-1)
3. Houston Texans (3-11)
4. New York Jets (3-11)
5. New York Giants via Chicago (4-10)
6. New York Giants (4-10)
7. Carolina Panthers (5-9)
8. New York Jets via Seattle (5-9)
9. Atlanta Falcons (6-8)
10. Washington Football Team (6-8)
Jaguars at Jets (1 p.m. on CBS)
All three of our CBS Sports NFL Draft experts have the Jaguars selecting Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 1 overall pick. Hutchinson, who finished second in this year's Heisman Trophy voting, tallied 14 sacks and 25 tackles for loss this season while leading Michigan to the College Football Playoffs.
The Jets are expected to address the offensive line and their cornerback position with their two first-round picks. Alabama's Evan Neal and NC State's Ikem Ekwonu are likely targets if the Jets choose to address their offensive line with their first pick, while LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. would likely be New York's choice if it chooses to use its first first-round pick on a cornerback.
Lions at Falcons (1 p.m. on Fox)
The consensus 1-2 picks in the draft are Hutchinson and Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux. Two of our experts have Thibodeaux going to Detroit with the No. 2 overall pick. Lions fans hope that their next first-round pick is as good as their last first-round pick, rookie offensive tackle Penei Sewell. While he battled through injuries this season, Thibodeaux still managed to record seven sacks, two forced fumble and 12 tackles for loss in 10 games this past season.
Chargers at Texans (1 p.m. on CBS)
While quarterback is a major question mark in Houston, all three of our experts have the Texans going in a different direction with the No. 3 overall pick. Three players to keep an eye on are Ekwonu, Stingley and Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton. Known as the "Pancake King," Ekwonu recently became the third unanimous consensus first-team All-American in NC State history. Stingley started as a true freshmen on LSU's undefeated 2019 team. Hamilton, a consensus All-American who hasn't played since suffering a knee injury on Oct. 12, has opted out of playing in Notre Dame's Fiesta Bowl game against Oklahoma State.
Bears at Seahawks (4:05 p.m. on FOX)
Giants fans are surely rooting for the Bears to lose on Sunday in order to improve their draft capital. Offensive line, defensive line and receiver are positions the Giants may address with their two first-round picks. CBS Sports NFL Draft analyst Chris Trapasso has the Giants selecting receiver Treylon Burks, who has caught 67 passes for 1,123 yards and 11 touchdowns heading into Arkansas' bowl game against the Penn State.
Giants at Eagles (1 p.m. on Fox)
Two of our CBS Draft experts have the Giants trading one of their picks in order to move up into the No. 2 spot in the draft. That would likely give them the chance to select Thibodeaux, who would be tasked with helping improve a Giants defense that is just 26th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed through 14 games.
