Warren Moon on Andrew Luck: No Weaknesses
Moon has been tutoring Luck and believes the quarterback is one of the most flawless prospects in recent NFL draft history. Also: Moon is working with Donovan McNabb.
Last year, Warren Moon predicted Cam Newton would shock the NFL, and prove to be one of the best quarterback prospects we've seen in a long time. Moon was right. In fact, whatever Moon has said to me about quarterbacks, it's proven correct. Maybe that's because he's one of the best to ever play the position.
He was right about Newton and what he says about Andrew Luck bodes well for Luck. Moon, like he did with Newton last year, has been tutoring Luck. Moon thinks the Colts are getting a player that "doesn't have any weaknesses. None."
"Here's the thing about Andrew that people need to realize," Moon said in an interview. "He does things better than almost any prospect I've ever seen. Does he do anything out of this world? No. But he does everything really well. Few quarterbacks actually can do that.
"What I mean is does he have that John Elway arm? No, but it's really close. Does he have that Mike Vick 4.4 speed? No, but he runs a 4.6. Is he going to be running over people every play like Tim Tebow? No, but he's just as tough. He does all those things and that makes him very dangerous."
Moon added: "It seems like nothing bothers Andrew because he's so mentally tough. Nothing fazes him. He never shows any type of panic. It was the same way with Cam."
Moon gave a small example. For several days before Luck's pro day they had rehearsed how things were going to do, including which way they were going to throw the ball. For those two days the wind blew one way. The day of the pro day, the wind not only shifted in the opposite direction, but increased dramatically. Moon offered Luck the option of changing direction but Luck declined. "We practiced it one way," Luck said, "and that's how we're going to do it."
So Luck threw into a stiff wind and still wowed scouts who never knew why he decided to throw into that wind instead of declining to do so. "Andrew didn't need perfect conditions," said Moon. "He didn't want them."
Moon predicts that when we look back at this draft it will be viewed as producing two excellent quarterback talents in Luck and Robert Griffin III who propelled two different franchises to success. But Moon also predicts how they reach that success will be different.
"Andrew is going to a team that basically has nothing around him," said Moon, "while RG3 will go to a more talented franchise. It will take more time for Andrew to win than RG3 but both eventually are going to win a lot of games."
One last thing. Moon is working with Donovan McNabb who last played in Minnesota and is trying to get back into football. What Moon has told McNabb, interestingly, is that McNabb lifts too many weights. He wants McNabb to stop bulking up which will give him more flexibility in his upper body.
"I think Donovan has a lot left," said Moon. "He's younger than Peyton Manning, who is 36, and Manning just signed a five-year contract. Donovan can definitely be a great quarterback again."
