Though he remained on the Boston Bruins after he was placed on and cleared waivers just before the start of the season, Maxime Talbot wasn’t able to stay with the club for long. After two appearances this season, Talbot has been sent down to the American Hockey League.

Talbot had registered no points and was a healthy scratch in five of the Bruins’ seven games. By sending him down, Boston opens up a roster spot for the now-healthy Matt Beleskey and also clear about $900,000 of cap space.

After placing a player on waivers and that player clearing, a team has 30 days or before the player plays 10 games before having to send hat player down. Talbot hit the waiver wire 22 days ago. Had he remained with the club beyond the 30-day period, he would have had to go through waivers again in order to be sent down.

The veteran winger was acquired last season in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs retained some of Talbot’s salary, which will remain on their salary cap for the rest of this season.

The 31-year-old has never been a dynamic offensive talent, but his play and ice time have been on the decline over the last two years. He had just five goals and 18 points last year between the Avalanche and Bruins.

As teams look to find cheaper, younger players to fill lower-lineup roles to help them get experience while also providing more skill to those lines, more and more veteran players are finding it difficult to stay on NHL rosters. Talbot appears to be the latest such casualty.
