LOOK: Capitals to begin wearing new third jersey, and they are awesome
The Washington Capitals are going old school with their new third jersey. And they look fantastic.
One of the biggest uniform mistakes any team has ever made in the NHL had to be in the mid-1990s when the Washington Capitals decided to dump their original red, white and blue uniform design to go with that hideous look that featured a giant swooping bald eagle across the front of their sweater (here is a reminder in case you have forgotten).
In recent years the Capitals have worked to correct that mistake. Their current regular jersey borrows from the original design, and over the past couple of years started wearing an alternate jersey that was a throwback to the original white jersey.
Now they are bringing back the red version of that uniform.
On Thursday the Capitals announced the schedule for the 15 home games they will be wearing their new alternate uniforms for, and gave fans a look at the new (old) look. We knew these jerseys were coming this season, but now we know when we finally get to see them in action.

From the Capitals:
The primary color for the uniform is red and closely resembles the team’s jersey worn from 1974-75 through 1994-95. The original Capitals wordmark is featured on the front of the jersey with six stars above it and five stars beneath the numbers on each sleeve. The Capitals will wear blue pants and red helmets with their third jerseys. The new third jersey will replace the white third jersey the Capitals wore from 2011-12 to 2014-15.
The Capitals will wear them for the first time on Dec. 16 against the Ottawa Senators, and then for 14 home dates after that.
