It’s the first night of conference play in Big Ten hockey and for college hockey’s youngest program, Friday was especially big. Penn State, with a 6-2-2 non-conference record, was on the road at historic Yost Arena to take on perennial power Michigan.

Already trailing 1-0 in the first period, Penn State sophomore goalie Eamon McAdam came up with what may be one of the best saves of his young career.

After getting fooled by Michigan’s Zach Hyman, who faked a shot to freeze McAdam, the Nittany Lions netminder had pretty much no time to recover as the puck started heading for Alex Kile on the back door. Then, out of nowhere Penn State forward Max Gardiner arrived on the back check, only he deflected the puck right toward the empty net.

At the last possible second, McAdam reached out with his goalie stick and swiped the puck away from the goal line. He had a little luck on his side, since that puck almost assuredly would have gone in if it made it to Kile, but it was still very dangerous.

Perhaps spurred on by their goaltender, the Nittany Lions went on to score three goals in the second period and held on for a 3-2 win to start Big ten play on the right foot.

McAdam was a third-round selection of the New York Islanders in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He was making his third appearance of the season Friday night. That save should set a pretty high bar to clear for him this year.
