Tomas Holmstrom is still an unrestricted free agent, available to any team that's interested in giving him an opportunity. But if he's not going to be playing for the Detroit Red Wings next season, he's not going to be playing for anybody.

At least that's what he recently told Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News when he was asked about reports out of Sweden that he might consider playing for another team.

"Not true at all," Holmstrom told Kulfan when discussing the reports. "It's playing in Detroit, or nowhere else. I appreciate Kenny [Holland] giving me this time to think about things. I'm training, I'm working out. But a lot of it depends on my health, my knees."

The 39-year-old Holmstrom appeared in 74 games for the Wings this past season scoring 11 goals to go with 13 assists. He's spent his entire career in Detroit since the team selected him in the 10th round of the 1994 NHL Draft.

Throughout his career he was arguably the best net-front presence in the NHL, especially on the power play, causing all sorts of havoc around the goal crease for opposing netminders. He also seemed to be directly involved with every controversial disallowed goal during Red Wings games.

Plays like this, for example:

His play has taken a noticeable decline in recent years, however, and his goal and point totals this past season were his worst since the 2001-02 season, when he was limited to 69 games. The Red Wings even seemed to shelter his even-strength minutes a bit this season, playing him against some of the opposition's weakest competition.

If Holmstrom doesn't return to the Red Wings (or the NHL) next season, he's certainly had an impressive career, scoring 243 goals in 1,026 games while also being a part of four Stanley Cup championship teams in Detroit.
