WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Cody Rhodes, John Cena make amends before SummerSlam; Jelly Roll brawls

Cena seemingly saw the light after turning on Rhodes earlier this year

Cody Rhodes and John Cena cracked open some beers on WWE SmackDown. You read that right -- the bitter rivals mended fences ahead of Sunday's undisputed WWE title match at SummerSlam.

Two weeks ago, Rhodes drove Cena through a table and forced him into a street fight. What should be a heated sequel to their WrestleMania 41 main event has softened after the two parties made amends. Cena's personality shift, if sincere, is a major shock after he turned on fans at the Elimination Chamber.

SmackDown also featured the return of country musician Jelly Roll, who joined Randy Orton in brawling Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul. Friday's show also featured two championship bouts: the women's United States and AAA tag team titles.

Cena and Rhodes crack open cold ones before SummerSlam

Did Cena see the light, or is he playing mind games? That's the seed WWE planted ahead of SummerSlam. Cena thanked Rhodes for cornering him into a dangerous match on a grand stage. Cena confessed that abandoning his principles was a mistake. Cena said he bought into someone else's idea for shocking television. Cena still wants to retire as undisputed WWE champion -- not to ruin wrestling, but so that fans remember him. At SummerSlam, Cena promises to bring his honorable best. Rhodes welcomed Cena's change of heart by retrieving a couple of beers for them to share.

Sunday's main event wasn't the only match promoted on SmackDown. Later in the show, McIntyre and Paul encountered their SummerSlam opponents, Orton and Jelly Roll. McIntyre and Paul berated their rivals and the live crowd. Jelly Roll and Orton rolled onto stage with a truck before exiting the vehicle and crashing the ring. A brawl broke out between the two parties, with McIntyre and Paul fleeing.

It's difficult to gauge SmackDown's opening segment without knowing the endgame. Rhodes will look like an idiot if Cena pulls a fast one on him at SummerSlam. If Cena is sincere, the character change feels rushed and uninspired. At the very least, there is an intriguing question attached to Sunday's main event. The show-closing tag team segment was very standard. Not much to say there. Grade: B+

• Damian Priest def. Aleister Black via disqualification after Black threw a steel chair at Priest. Post-match, Black laid out Priest with Black Mass.
• Talla Tonga def. Jimmy Uso via pinfall with a chokeslam. Post-match, Jacob Fatu rescued Uso from Solo Sikoa's goons.
