First, a fact not that well known. Bill Self started his career as an assistant at Kansas in 1985. Never in his biggest dreams could he have imagined he would return to coach the Jayhawks and become the winningest coach in Phog Allen Fieldhouse history.
But he reached that milestone Friday night as Kansas (2-1) cruised to an 86-65 win over Siena at Lawrence, Kan., notching win No. 207 for Self at Allen Fieldhouse to pass Ted Owens on the all-time list.
Let us reflect on Self's run since he arriving at Kansas in 2003:
- Self's last home loss came nearly three years ago, against San Diego State. KU has won 43 straight since, the nation's longest home streak. In fact, only nine teams have beaten KU with Self on the sideline at the Phog. I wrote a feature last year on the nine coaches who pulled it off.
- Self's home winning percentage at Kansas is an outrageous .958 (207-9).
- Here are the all-time marks for previous KU coaches at Phog: Owens (206-47), Roy Williams (201-17), Larry Brown (71-5), Dick Harp (51-29) and Allen (9-2).
- Self has never won fewer than 23 games in a season and has averaged 29.6 wins at KU. This is not normal.
- Self has a national title to his name at Kansas, but also an unthinkable 12 straight regular-season Big 12 titles. Yes, you read right: Self has won more league titles than home losses (9).
- Self has coached 10 NBA lotto picks at KU. He was coached 24 Jayhawks who have made NBA rosters, with more to come on this 2016-17 club.
- Oral Roberts was not in a conference when Self began his career there. So since he began at Tulsa, then a member of the WAC, Self has coached in league play for 18 seasons. He's won a regular-season title and/or a conference postseason title in 16 of those 18 seasons.
- The two seasons he did not win a title, his team finished runner-up. This is STUPID.
- Self's four straight 30-win seasons from 2010-13 is only matched in NCAA Division I history by John Calipari at Memphis from 2006-09.
- Self is one of six coaches (Gene Bartow, John Calipari, Lon Kruger, Rick Pitino, Eddie Sutton are the others) to take three programs to the Elite Eight. Self did it at Tulsa, Illinois and KU. For the record, Self went 74-27 at Tulsa and 78-24 at Illinois.
Self's next milestone should come in December. He's only six wins away from 600 career Ws.
