With Rick Pitino effectively out at Louisville, interim President Dr. Greg Postel must name a successor, even if it's for the short-term.

In the last 46 years, Louisville has had exactly two coaches - Pitino and Denny Crum. Turnover simply isn't something that happens at the Kentucky school. Those two have combined for over 1,000 victories and three national titles.

According to CardinalAuthority.com, hiring current Louisville assistant coach David Padgett is the "simplest" solution.

The CardinalAuthority.com team, which includes Jody Demling, has been covering Louisville athletics for 25 years. They're on the ground, on campus, reporting on every development as the Cardinals look for a replacement for Pitino, both long-term and short-term. They have connections in the Louisville community, and with prospective coaches, that are unmatched.

"I'm not sure anyone with 30 years of experience would know what to do in this situation," one Division I coach told Cardinal Authority. "This isn't something that's in a 'How To' book for athletic directors."

Padgett could be the ideal short-term solution. "Padgett is the simple option," one Division I coach told Demling. "It's too easy in this bad situation. But is whomever making the decision smart enough to figure that out?"

According to Demling, Padgett is meeting with Postel on Thursday. And during Tuesday's press conference, university officials said they wanted to name an athletic director and new men's basketball coach within 48 hours. The clock's ticking.

Padgett also has the backing of Louisville basketball players, according to Demling, and several have reached out to the President's office to voice how much they want him to coach this year.

"If Padgett is clean, why wouldn't they," one source said. "He'll coach the guys this year, a seamless transition, and then you figure things out down the line. It's still a great job. If Chris Mack or Buzz Williams wants the job now, they're going to likely want it in April."
