Gary Danielson: Florida game is an absolute must-win for Tennessee, Butch Jones
SEC on CBS lead analyst Gary Danielson joined Chip Patterson to preview Saturday's game
Florida's 11-game winning streak against Tennessee will be put to the test on Saturday in Knoxville. The game, picked as the SEC on CBS Game of the Week, will set the table for the SEC East race as the first contest between apparent contenders for the SEC Championship Game. This rivalry is packed with passion and busting with storylines, mostly centering around the Vols and coach Butch Jones.
"There are games around college football, and games in this conference, that will have more of a national impact and be a bigger football game, but for meaning to a program, it's been a long time sine I've done a must-win game like this," SEC on CBS lead analyst Gary Danielson told me this week on the SEC on CBS Podcast. "Tennessee has all the parts, they have all the talent, they have enough to win. They cannot seem to get that cohesiveness or belief, or understanding of just how to win.
"Butch Jones has to find a way to win this game. Cameron Sutton's not playing, Darrin Kirkland -- their best linebacker -- is not playing, they're struggling on the offensive line -- it doesn't matter. They've got 85 guys on this team and they cannot have Florida come in there and figure out a way to beat Butch Jones."
Florida has its own injury issues, missing starting quarterback Luke Del Rio for at least two games with a sprained MCL. But while backup quarterback Austin Appleby found himself in the headlines for some Neyland Stadium-related smack talk, Danielson says the key for Tennessee not only in this game, but the rest of the year, will be Josh Dobbs taking another step in his development.
"When is [Dobbs] going to take that next step, where he becomes Dak Prescott instead of just a guy at quarterback," Danielson said. "Can he stand up and carry the football team to Atlanta. I tell you what, these next four weeks. Tennessee's got Florida, then they go to Georgia, then they go to A&M then they come back home to play Alabama. This is it."
