South Carolina to name new indoor practice facility after Steve Spurrier
South Carolina's new $14.3 million indoor practice facility will be named after Steve and Jerri Spurrier.
South Carolina is investing $50 million to upgrade its football facilities and a major project on the list of upgrades is a new $14.3 million indoor practice facility.
On Tuesday, the school's Board of Trustees agreed to name the indoor facility after Steve Spurrier and wife Jerri.
Athletic Director Ray Tanner said the Spurriers were "humbled by the attention" and had previously told the board naming something after them was unnecessary.
According to The State, one donor pushed for Williams-Brice Stadium to be renamed for Spurrier, but instead they went with the practice facility. Spurrier currently has a spot on the ring of honor inside the stadium noting him as the winningest coach in school history.
The field inside the facility will be named after Ken Wheat and the 1969 Gamecocks that won the ACC title. Wheat and his family are helping to fund the project.
