Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman is stepping down from his position at the university.

Hyman announced his departure from College Station on Tuesday in a surprising move that came just one day after he offered up a public vote of confidence for football coach Kevin Sumlin.

"I appreciate my time here at Texas A&M University and I am proud of our student-athletes' achievements both on the field and in the classroom," said Hyman in a statment. "The best part of an AD's job is forming wonderful relationships with student-athletes, colleagues, former students and Texas A&M has been no exception. I will always value my time here and the friendships I have made with Aggies. I wish Texas A&M University nothing but continued success."

On Monday, in an interview with SportsDay, Hyman offered Sumlin his support.

"Coach Sumlin is our coach; we're looking forward to the future," said Hyman. "He has done not only from a competitive standpoint but an academic standpoint all the principles that we think Texas A&M represents he represents."

Hyman was hired in June 2012 after holding the same position at South Carolina and helped the Aggies make the transition from the Big 12 to the SEC.

Since Hyman took over, the Aggies' football team has gone 28-11 over three seasons, and Texas A&M's basketball team went 57-43 before starting this season 11-2 with a No. 21 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll.
