By the time 2016 rolls around, the tailgating experience at Texas A&M might be so revolutionized that an entirely new type of tailgating is permitted near Kyle Field. During the 2016 season and beyond, tailgating on the shores of a lake prior to an Aggies' home game might be possible.

According to Phillip Ray, vice chancellor for business affairs for the A&M system, the school and a group of donors are looking to develop a small lake or pond at Spence Park by 2016. Spence Park is located across from Kyle Field, the home of the Aggies.

Ray spoke with The Eagle about the plans to add water to the park.

"Chancellor Sharp has directed us to explore all options that would enable us to develop the premier tailgating area in the Southeastern Conference and beyond," Ray said. "The Aggies are about to up the ante."

Currently, Texas A&M is already renovating Kyle Field, which will improve the quality of the facilities and add more seats to the stadium. The renovations, which carry a price tag of $450 million, are expected to be complete in time for the Aggies' home opener in September.

Last December, a portion of the field was brought down by a controlled demolition.

As for the addition of a new nearby lake, those plans are still in development. According to Ray, the initial designs aren't yet shareable. Still, he told The Eagle that the lake or pond will be "significant."

"It's not something you'll walk by and you miss it," Ray said. "It will be significant. [Sharp] wants to do it the best us Aggies can do and I'm confident the final solution will make it a prominent place on campus."
