Padres' Griffin Canning: Quick hook Tuesday
    3m ago

Canning allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning Tuesday versus Atlanta. He didn't factor in the decision.

This was penciled in as a bulk-relief outing, but Canning's poor showing to start the second inning took the bulk out of the conversation. He ended up being the pitcher with the fewest outs recorded for the Padres in this contest. It's another low mark in a season that has had few things to celebrate for the 30-year-old. Canning has a 7.38 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 43:26 K:BB through 42.2 innings over 10 appearances (eight starts). It's unclear how much longer he'll be an option in San Diego's rotation -- if JP Sears does well Wednesday, Canning could be the one to lose a starting role once German Marquez (forearm) is activated.

Castro went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Tuesday against the Red Sox.

He's had strong production in June, racking up three homers, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored and one stolen base across 18 contests. Castro has benefited from 10 games at Coors Field and an additional three in Sacramento in that span, but he's still managed to take advantage of the positive-hitting environments.

Lee entered June on a surge at the plate, and while that's tapered off, he still has four multi-hit efforts over his last seven games. The outfielder is batting .403 (29-for-72) this month with two homers, and he's logged all five of his steals on the year in that span. Giants' Caleb Kilian: Nabs fifth save
    30m ago

Kilian allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Athletics.

Kilian's last five outings had come in non-save situations, in part due to the Giants' difficulty in earning wins. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in that span, and his scoreless streak is up to 8.1 innings with a 12:4 K:BB since his five-run meltdown versus the Rockies on May 29. Kilian has a 2.97 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 39:16 K:BB over 33.1 innings while adding five saves and three holds. He remains the favorite for saves in San Francisco, but the team's poor play makes this a tough bullpen to target in general.

Giants' Robbie Ray: Deals for eight innings in win
    33m ago

Ray (6-6) allowed one unearned run on two hits and four walks while striking out six over eight innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Athletics.

Ray had his longest start of the season despite the four walks, getting by on 102 pitches (59 strikes) before Caleb Kilian worked the ninth inning. This was a strong showing for Ray, who has allowed just six runs (five earned) over 25 innings across his four games in June. He had some struggles in late May after a strong start to the season, but Ray has mostly bounced back. For the year, he has a 3.70 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 80:42 K:BB through 87.2 innings over 16 outings (15 starts). The southpaw's next start is expected to come at home versus Atlanta this weekend. He tossed 6.1 scoreless innings of relief in the resumption of a suspended game versus Atlanta last week, but it's still a tough matchup.

Athletics' Aaron Civale: Better showing in losing effort
    44m ago

Civale (5-4) allowed two runs on six hits and a hit batsman while striking out five without walking a batter over four innings to take the loss versus the Giants on Tuesday.

Civale wasn't all that efficient, but he threw 57 of 84 pitches for strikes in his second start back from shoulder tendinitis. The right-hander gave up both runs in the second inning, and the Athletics' offense had little response with just three hits for the game. Civale should be good for a full workload moving forward, though performance remains a concern. He's at a 4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 62.2 innings over 13 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be in a favorable road matchup versus the Angels this weekend.

Baz (4-8) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Angels.

Baz gave up a two-run home run to Nolan Schanuel in the first inning, and the Orioles never got enough going on offense to bail him out. The five earned runs allowed matched Baz's season high. He's given up 16 runs (11 earned) across 22.2 innings over his last four starts, going 1-3 in that span. For the season, he has a 4.31 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 81:35 K:BB across 94 innings through 16 starts. Baz is projected to make his next start at home versus the White Sox.

Rockies' Sean Sullivan: Shows poor control in loss

Sullivan (0-2) took the loss against Boston on Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three batters over five innings.

Sullivan was able to complete five frames for the first time as a big-leaguer, but that's where the positives end. The southpaw put himself in constant danger by handing out five free passes, with two of the batters he walked eventually coming around to score. Sullivan was at least better than in his previous start, when he was rocked by the Cubs for eight runs over four innings, but his performances so far have given fantasy managers no reason to consider adding him to their rosters.

Guardians' Parker Messick: Fans 10 in tough-luck loss
    1h ago

Messick (7-4) took the loss Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 7.2 innings.

Messick gave Cleveland arguably the best start of his career Tuesday, as he threw 63 of his 95 pitches for strikes and generated an impressive 17 whiffs while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts. The left-hander retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced before Colson Montgomery delivered an RBI single to open the scoring. Messick later surrendered a solo homer to Miguel Vargas in the sixth, which ultimately proved to be the deciding run in a low-scoring contest. The outing continued an excellent stretch for the 25-year-old, who has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine starts and recorded 19 strikeouts over his last 13.2 innings. He'll carry a 2.67 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB into his next scheduled start at home against Texas.

Angels' Ryan Johnson: Dominant for first win

Johnson (1-2) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Orioles on Tuesday.

Johnson had struggled in most of his other appearances this season, allowing three or more runs in four of his first five outings. He found something against the Orioles, throwing 63 of 90 pitches for strikes Tuesday. Over 19.1 innings across six games (three starts), Johnson still has an 8.84 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB. He appears set to do some learning on the job while filling in for Grayson Rodriguez (back) in the Angels' rotation. Johnson is tentatively projected to make his next appearance on the road versus the Mariners.

Newcomb earned the save Tuesday against the Guardians, allowing one walk while striking out two over 2.2 scoreless innings.

With the closer committee of Seranthony Dominguez, Grant Taylor and Bryan Hudson all pitching in each of the previous two days, Newcomb was called upon after Sean Burke delivered 6.1 innings of one-run ball. The veteran left-hander took over from there and worked around a lone walk to secure his second save of the season. Newcomb has been excellent since the start of May, posting a 1.50 ERA during that stretch. He now owns a 2.44 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 46:12 K:BB across 48 innings this season.

Diamondbacks' Brandyn Garcia: Rescues team for first save
    2h ago

Garcia earned the save against the Cardinals on Tuesday, striking out the only batter he faced in the ninth inning.

Tuesday's matchup was mostly a pitcher's duel, as neither team scored through eight innings. Arizona finally broke out for a four-run ninth, then turned the ball over to closer Paul Sewald. However, the veteran reliever couldn't get the job done, as he got just two outs while allowing three runs on four hits. With star rookie JJ Wetherholt coming up for the Cardinals and the tying run on first base, Arizona manager Torey Luvollo turned to Garcia to get the final out. He was able to do by striking out Wetherholt on four pitches, in the process recording the first save of his career. Garcia has been effective this season with a 2.50 ERA and 19:5 K:BB through 18 innings, but Sewald has a firm hold on the team's closer role despite his struggles Tuesday.

Twins' Kendry Rojas: Uneven in short spot start
    3h ago

Rojas allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out four batters over two innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Rojas got a chance to start Tuesday after Joe Ryan was scratched due to an illness. Rojas had thrown just 33 pitches in his lone rehab appearance after being activated off the IL on Sunday following a triceps injury, so he wasn't expected to go very deep, and that indeed proved to be the case. With that said, the lefty probably could have covered more innings if not for his lack of control -- he needed 50 pitches to cover two frames, with only 25 of his offerings going for strikes. On the plus side, Rojas struck out four and managed to work around his wildness to allow just one run. Ultimately, it was Austin Voth who took on a starter's workload in his first appearance as a Twin, eating up four innings with 96 pitches. Neither Rojas nor Voth figures to enter the rotation since Ryan has been cleared to return Wednesday.

The right-hander has held opponents scoreless in 13 of his last 14 appearances while piling up 19 strikeouts during that stretch. After a shaky start to the year, Megill has steadily lowered his ratios and continues to look like a lockdown late-inning option for Milwaukee. He now owns a 3.72 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 38:8 K:BB across 29 innings this season.

Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in a 2-1 win against Minnesota on Monday.

Ohtani gave Los Angeles an early jolt, belting a 414-foot homer to right field to lead off the game. That was his only hit, but the Twins helped emphasize how much the slugger is feared when they walked him intentionally with two outs and a runner on first base in the ninth inning. Ohtani had a slow start to the season in the power department, going deep an uncharacteristic eight times over his first 50 games, but he's picked up the pace since. Over his past 21 contests, the two-way superstar has nine homers along with 15 RBI. His offensive numbers are still below his usual lofty standards, but Ohtani nonetheless ranks fourth among qualified hitters with a .976 OPS.
