If you're new to the Head-to-Head categories format, which tends to be most popular on competitor sites like Yahoo, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the quirks upfront: two utility spots instead of one, four flex pitcher spots in addition to two SPs and two RPs, a weekly innings minimum, etc.

Of course, the most critical difference is the use of Rotisserie-inspired 5x5 scoring rather than Fantasy Football-inspired points scoring, as is more common in CBS Sports leagues. It keeps the emphasis on stolen bases high and on starting pitchers relatively low.

The valuation of players is similar to Rotisserie, in other words, and so the draft tends to play out similarly. I'm more discerning about the hitters I take, though, recognizing both that there are fewer lineup spots to "balance" the five categories and that modest contributions to any category are practically worthless when dispensed only a week at a time. Give me a one-dimensional masher over a jack-of-all-trades type, in other words, and if I'm paying for speed, it better be a lot of it.

But enough with the generalizations. Here are some observations from this specific draft:

  • Kyle Tucker, who's normally a borderline first-rounder, slipped to the middle of Round 2, behind notables like Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Luis Robert and Jacob deGrom. Apparently, others agree that his 12-15 steals don't have the same impact a week at a time as they do over a full season in Rotisserie.
  • I went off ranking with Manny Machado at 22 overall, figuring I wouldn't have a shot at Austin Riley late in Round 4 and not wanting to put all my eggs in the Nolan Arenado basket. My hope was that one of Shane Bieber and Zack Wheeler, both of whom I rank ahead of Machado, would make it back to me. Chris Towers ended up taking both. Looking at my eventual pitching staff, though, I have no regrets.
  • My personal rule for Salvador Perez is to take him every time he's available in Round 4, believing him to be the biggest singular advantage you could have at any position, but it wasn't realistic to think he'd last to me late in Round 4. So should I have reached for him early in Round 3, forgoing Cedric Mullins? Nobody likes to reach, but there's only one Perez. Particularly in this format, where there's so much riding on every lineup spot, it's something to think about.
  • Marcus Semien, who normally goes early in Round 3, lasted until late in Round 4 in this draft. He's one of my bust picks, but that's just, like, my opinion, man. Yoink!
  • Liam Hendriks and Josh Hader continue to set a new standard for how early high-end relievers should go, bookending Round 4 in this draft. Interestingly, Raisel Iglesias got stapled to them this time, going with the first pick of Round 5, which then led to Ryan Pressly and Edwin Diaz going a couple picks later. I am not in favor.
  • All of those reliever picks likely contributed to Francisco Lindor slipping to Round 7, which I think is more appropriate than Round 4, where he normally goes. Tim Anderson slid along with him.
  • Marcell Ozuna went in middle Round 9, Pick 100 overall, which is by far the earliest I've seen him go. It may become more common, though, now that manager Brian Snitker has said he expects Ozuna to be part of the team this year. The 31-year-old was the No. 1 outfielder two years ago but struggled early last year before being placed on the restricted list for a domestic violence investigation.
