Kevin McCarthy: Heads to free agency

McCarthy elected free agency Friday rather than accept an outright assignment to the minors.

McCarthy will try his luck on the open market after being removed from the Royals' 40-man roster. The righty threw 191.2 innings over parts of five seasons in Kansas City, recording a 3.80 ERA despite striking out just 14.5 percent of opposing batters.
