Scruggs was outrighted from the Marlins' 40-man roster and elected free agency, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

The 29-year-old mashed during his tenure with Triple-A New Orleans, but his bat simply didn't translate to the big leagues. Scruggs will look to land with an organization in need of depth at first base, as it's unlikely he'll get a major role with any team until he proves he can consistently hit major league pitching.
