  • Santillan was called up by Cincinnati on Tuesday. Santillan has struck out 30 batters in 23.1 innings at the highest level this season but owns a mediocre 4.24 ERA. He'll take the bullpen spot that had been occupied by Heath Hembree, who was designated for assignment.

  • Santillan was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander covered 3.2 scoreless frames in his past three outings, but he'll head back to Triple-A with Michael Lorenzen (hamstring) returning from the injured list. Santillan will continue working as a reliever with Louisville and could rejoin Cincinnati's bullpen down the stretch.

  • Santillan struck out three while allowing one hit over 1.2 innings Monday against the Cubs in relief of starter Wade Miley. Santillan had a couple of rough appearances after the All-Star break, but he's now thrown three straight scoreless outings, striking out at least two in each. That may not seem like much, but it might be enough to put him in a higher-leverage spot his next time out.

  • Santillan was recalled by the Reds on Thursday. Santillan will be taking the roster spot that had belonged to Sonny Gray (ribs), who hit the injured list in a corresponding move. It doesn't look as though he'll be taking Gray's spot in the rotation, however, as Gray just pitched Wednesday and won't see his turn come up again until after the All-Star break. Santillan is unlikely to have much fantasy value as a reliever, as his solid 3.78 ERA in four starts this season comes with a roughly average 24.4 percent strikeout rate and a poor 1.68 WHIP.

  • Santillan was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. The 24-year-old gave up three runs (two earned) over three innings Tuesday and will head to the minors with Sonny Gray (groin) slated to rejoin the rotation this weekend. According to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, Santillan is expected to rejoin the Reds and work out of the bullpen after spending the required 10 days in the minors.
