Gafford had six points, three rebounds and two blocks in 15 minutes during Friday's 116-108 loss to Miami. Gafford played 15 minutes off the bench in the loss, blocking another two shots in the process. He has now played at least 15 minutes in three consecutive games, blocking a pair of shots in each outing. Wendell Carter is locked in as the starter but Gafford appears to have carved out some meaningful minutes for himself. He could be a sneaky blocks streamer or even an asset in deeper formats.
Gafford set career highs across the board Monday in the Bulls' 115-101 loss to the Bucks, scoring 20 points (10-12 FG, 1-2 FT) and adding five rebounds, two blocks and one steal. After playing only 13 minutes across the Bulls' first 13 games, Gafford cracked the rotation as the backup to starting center Wendell Carter with Luke Kornet (nose) sidelined. The rookie second-round pick made an immediate impact in the first extended action of his career, bolstering his case for sticking in the rotation even once Kornet is healthy. Gafford isn't a threat to unseat Carter for the starting job, but the Arkansas product could be someone to keep an eye on in deeper leagues if he continues to offer strong per-minute numbers.
Gafford will rejoin the Bulls ahead of Saturday's tilt with the Rockets, NBA Sports Chicago reports. Gafford will return to the parent club, presumably for rotational depth. In two games for the Bulls this year, the rookie center's averaged 0.0 points and 0.5 rebounds in 3.0 minutes.
Gafford was assigned to the G League's Windy City Bulls on Saturday. Gafford hasn't been able to find playing time, appearing in just one game and seeing two minutes. It's possible the Bulls will have him play some games in the G League to get experience.
Gafford remained on the bench Friday, continuing his rough start to the season. Gafford is yet to make any sort of mark in his rookie season, but the lack of talent ahead of him bodes well for his outlook. Luke Kornet started at center but had just two points in 10 minutes. Gafford is going to have to play the waiting game, yet the guess is he'll at least get a chance to flaunt his wares in the near future.
