Cowen was traded to the Maple Leafs on Tuesday along with Milan Michalek, Colin Greening, Tobias Lindberg and a draft pick in exchange for Dion Phaneuf and several prospects.
The ninth overall pick in 2009, Cowen hasn't come remotely close to living up to that lofty status, often serving as a healthy scratch this year. He notched just four assists in 37 games for Ottawa this season, but did rack up 116 hits; the Leafs seemingly value his toughness on the blue line, as he could serve to at least partially replace the physicality they've lost by trading Phaneuf.
