Red Wings' Gemel Smith: Assist and fight in team debut

Smith registered an assist and a fighting major in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Kings.

Smith made his biggest impact in the third period. He dropped the mitts with Kings enforcer Brendan Lemieux, and then Smith had an assist on a Joe Veleno goal in the final minute. This was the 27-year-old Smith's first game as a Red Wing after he spent the first three months of the season rehabbing a lower-body injury as a member of the Lightning. He'll compete for a bottom-six role going forward, though Smith is more likely to add grit than offense.
