Indy 500 2018 Vegas picks, predictions, lineup, starting grid: Fade Simon Pagenaud, back Sage Karam
Micah Roberts, who helped popularize betting on auto racing, breaks down the 2018 Indy 500 field
The biggest race of the IndyCar season gets underway for the 102nd time on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Will Power and Tony Kanaan are the Vegas co-favorites at 8-1 in the latest odds, followed closely by Alexander Rossi, Sebastien Bourdais and Josef Newgarden at 10-1.
Before you make any kind of pick on the Indy 500, you need to see what Micah Roberts has to say.
In 2016, Rossi shocked the world as a rookie, winning the Indy 500 as an 80-1 long-shot. The nation's premier auto racing betting expert, Roberts was all over Rossi from the start.
Last year, sportsbooks listed Takuma Sato as a 25-1 long shot. But Roberts liked his speed during practice runs and listed him in the top 10 of his projected leaderboard. The result: Sato stunned IndyCar with his first win since 2013. Anybody who backed him saw a massive return.
Spot-on picks are the norm from Roberts, the first Vegas bookmaker to offer expanded betting on auto racing. Now he hands out winners to his followers.
In addition to being high on Sato at the Indianapolis 500 last year, Roberts has made some legendary calls, including picking nine of the 10 winners in the 2017 NASCAR playoffs. In 2016, he backed Denny Hamlin (15-1) at the Daytona 500 and took him again at 40-1 at Watkins Glen later that year -- two more victories with huge payouts.
Now, Roberts has studied the 2018 Indy 500 field and locked in his projected leaderboard over at SportsLine.
One value pick he absolutely loves: Sage Karam at 15-1.
"He makes his fifth Indy 500 start and the thing that stood out most to make him a legitimate contender to win was being fastest (226.461 mph) during Practice 8, the day after qualifying," Roberts told SportsLine. "He starts 24th, so he'll have to be careful moving through traffic. But he's definitely got some speed."
And in a surprise: Roberts is fading Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud, saying he finishes well outside the top 10 despite getting 12-1 odds as one of the 2018 Indy 500 favorites.
That's because he posted the slowest time during Practice 8, so he's way too risky of a pick. There are much better values in this loaded 2018 Indy 500 starting grid.
Roberts has also identified a huge sleeper with odds longer than 30-1 who has a real shot at taking the checkered flag because of his performances in practice. Vegas isn't giving this driver any credit, so anybody who backs him could cash in huge.
