Barcelona star Lionel Messi netted a hat trick Saturday against Seville, maiking him the top scorer in the history of La Liga.

Messi's first goal came in the 21st minute off a free kick -- a classic bending shot around the wall -- tying him with former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra, who set the record in 1955. For good measure, Messi added a couple more, bringing his total to 253 -- and counting.

Zarra's record stood for several decades, and was never really threatened until Messi came along. At just 27, Messi certainly seems capable of putting some significant distance between he and Zarra.

Of course, there's no guarantee Messi will stay with Barcelona, and there are rumors he's looking to ship out due to charges in Spain of tax fraud.

Regardless, Messi added to his growing list of accomplishments Saturday, and he was carried from the field in celebration by his Barca teammates.
