Report: Ex-Patrick Reed teammate says he lied about scores in college
One of Patrick Reed's Augusta State teammates says Reed purposefully shaved strokes in college in qualifying events.
Remember when the rumors about Tiger Woods' sex life started swirling and all of a sudden it seemed like two dozen women came forward with stories?
That's what this Patrick Reed story is starting to feel like, too.
It's cheating of a different sort we're talking about, though.
The back story -- in as few words as I can provide -- is that Reed was accused of cheating in college by journalist Shane Ryan, vehemently refuted the report, got called out by an assistant coach and is now being called out by a former teammate.
That former Augusta State teammate anonymously spoke with Steph Wei recently and said that Reed was found to have been shaving strokes on two occasions, both qualifying events.
Reed was eventually confronted by his teammates and Augusta State coach, Josh Gregory. Here's an excerpt from Wei's report:
"Sitting at a long table with Gregory at one end and Reed at the other, the group went over both of his practice rounds hole-by-hole, and found that Reed’s stated score had been incorrect on both occasions.
"Reed reacted defensively, and when the teammates advised him to admit that he’d been shaving scores on purpose—since they’d respect him more if he was honest—he refused, and became angry. He was especially aggressive with the teammate from the first round, who was described as 'easily the nicest guy on the team.'"
That's certainly not a good look for Reed, who doesn't have the best reputation with former teammates. The report went on to say that Gregory was planning on kicking Reed off the team but eventually changed his mind.
It will be interesting to see what the response is from Reed's camp after Georgia's assistant confirmed what Ryan reported and now this report. Will they go radio silent? Come out with another Golf Channel interview?
I don't think this story is dead by a long shot.
Here's the entire report by Wei, which you should read.
