Rory McIlroy used to hate the Old Course at St. Andrews
The best golfer and the most famous course in the world did not share affections for one another for quite a while.

Rory McIlroy nearly won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last week at the Old Course at St. Andrews. It was a prelude to what's sure to be a very McIlroyian affair at the same course for the 2015 British Open.
But what about the first time McIlroy played the course as a teenager?
"Hated it," he said.
Wait.
Hated it? The Old Course? One of the most famous golf courses in the world?
"Thought it was the worst golf course I've ever played," he said. "I just stood up on every tee and was like, 'What is the fascination about this place?' But the more you play it and the more you learn about the golf course and the little nuances, you learn to appreciate it. Now it's my favorite golf course in the world."
I've actually heard this from other folks before so McIlroy's not alone. Well, he is alone -- he's the best golfer on planet Earth -- but not when it comes to his opinion on St. Andrews.
