Wayne Gretzky says watching Dustin Johnson brings back the thrill of competing
Future father-in-law Wayne Gretzky gets anxious over big shots and putts by Dustin Johnson
Wayne Gretzky went on "In Depth with Graham Bensinger" recently to discuss all things hockey but also some Dustin Johnson.
Johnson is engaged to Gretzky's daughter, Paulina, and The Great One has played a big role in Johnson's development both as a golfer and person.
It was really interesting to hear Gretzky talk about the way he consumes Johnson's golf. Gretzky, one of the great athletes of all time, says he struggles sometimes to not get insanely nervous to the point of being unable to watch Johnson putt (hold the jokes, please).
"I never thought -- once I retired -- that I would have the same sense or the same feeling, going into tournaments that you are pulling so badly and wanting somebody to win so desperately that your stomach hurts when you are watching," said Gretzky.
"Sometimes I have to turn away if [Dustin's] got a putt or sometimes I get nervous if he's got a shot ... That's because you're pulling for them so badly that you get this anxiety inside you that you want them to be so successful."
Johnson had a career year in 2016 and took home his first PGA Tour Player of the Year Award. Gretzky said his career flipped a little when he was left off the 2013 Presidents Cup team.
"His life changed ... when he was disappointed he didn't make the Presidents Cup team in 2013 when he wasn't a captain's pick. That shook him up to a point where [my wife] Janet said to him one night, 'Don't put your fate in anyone else's hands,'" Gretzky recalled. "That's when he really made the decision as a professional athlete, 'I'm going to control my own destiny from now on.' From that point on, he became a different person and a more complete golfer."
