Geovany SotoCubs catcher Geovany Soto will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus on his left knee, manager Dale Sveum told reporters before Friday's game against the White Sox (via the Chicago Tribune).

According to Sveum, Soto suffered a "slight tear" in his knee. He is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

The team didn't put Soto on the DL on Friday, but did call up Blake Lalli from Triple-A in time for Friday's game. Wellington Castillo will likely get the bulk of playing time with Soto gone.

To make room ofr Lalli, the Cubs optioned right-hander Chris Volstad to Triple-A Iowa.
