Next year the Mets will host their first All-Star Game since 1964, breaking the longest streak without hosting the Midsummer Classic in baseball. So, what team is next in line? It's not that easy.
The Royals haven't had an All-Star Game since 1973, but the 2012 game will be in Kansas City. The location for the 2014 game has not been announced, but because the game alternates between the American League and National League every year, CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports the Twins will get that game. The Nationals, Marlins and Reds have bid on the 2015 game.
Neither of the Florida teams have ever hosted an All-Star Game, while Washington D.C. hasn't had the game since 1969. Of course, the Nationals didn't have a team from 1972-2004, so it's not exactly the same as waiting the nearly 50 years the Mets did.
Among the teams that have had an All-Star Game, it's the Dodgers that have waited the longest. Dodger Stadium last hosted in 1980. That's so long ago that the MVP of that game has seen his son not only appear in All-Star Games, but also retire after a Hall of Fame-worthy career. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey Sr. was the MVP that year.
Here's the list of teams waiting the longest since hosting the game and what year that team last hosted:
Dodgers 1980
Nationals/Expos 1982
Twins 1985
Athletics 1987
Reds 1988
Cubs 1990
Blue Jays 1991
Padres 1992
Orioles 1993
Rangers 1995
There are eight different ballparks currently in use that haven't hosted an All-Star Game. Here they are, with the year the park opened and that franchise's last All-Star Game:
Tropicana Field (Rays) 1998*/NA
Great American Ball Park (Reds) 2003/1988
Petco Park (Padres) 2004/1992
Citizens Bank Park (Phillies) 2004/1996
Nationals Park (Nationals) 2008/1982**
Yankee Stadium (Yankees) 2009/2008
Target Field (Twins) 2010/1985
Marlins Stadium (Marlins) 2012/NA
* Tropicana Field opened as the Florida Suncoast Dome in 1990, but the Rays didn't inhabit the building until 1998.
** The 1982 game was at the Expos' Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
Hosting the game isn't always about what team hasn't had it in a long time, there are other factors and those will come to play, but it seems the Marlins are the favorite for 2015. Another one to keep in mind, 2019 will mark the 150th anniversary of professional baseball and would be a perfect fit for the Reds, who haven't hosted an All-Star Game at Great American Ball Park and owner Bob Castellini is desperate to land the game.
