The Orioles made major-league history Thursday night in Seattle. Obscure history, but history nonetheless.
Thanks to Hyun Soo Kim's seventh-inning solo home run, the O's have set a new record with 56 home runs in the month of June. Here's the historic blast:
The previous record was held by the 1996 Athletics. They swatted 55 home runs in June, 14 of which were hit by Mark McGwire.
The O's fell two home runs short of tying the record for home runs in any month. Here's the all-time list:
- 1987 Orioles - 58 HR in May
- 1999 Mariners - 58 HR in May
- 1999 Reds - 56 HR in September/October
- 2010 Blue Jays - 56 HR in September/October
- 2016 Orioles - 56 HR in June
Those are the only five teams to hit 56-plus home runs in a calendar month. The Orioles had a few innings remaining after Kim's homer to try to set the record for an individual month, but no one else went deep.
