Jeff Suppan

The Padres have designated Jeff Suppan for assignment. The struggling 37-year-old right-hander has 5.28 ERA on the season, and he's been cuffed around in each of his last three starts. Coming into this season, Suppan had not pitched at the major-league level since 2010, so his mere presence on the roster was a personal triumph in and of itself.

As for the Padres, the move makes room for the recently called-up Yasmani Grandal. It hasn't yet been decided who will replace Suppan in the rotation. The Padres recently signed Jason Marquis to a minor-league contract, so signs of desperation still abound. Presently, they have six pitchers on the disabled list.

It should also be noted that Jamie Moyer is available.
