Red Sox designate Brayan Villarreal for assignment

The Red Sox designated pitcher Brayan Villarreal for assignment Wednesday, clearing a 40-man roster spot for the addition of Grady Sizemore, the team announced.

Villarreal was acquired last season in the same deal that brought Jake Peavy to Boston. He faced just one batter with the Red Sox and walked him. Villarreal also allowed 10 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings with the Tigers last season.
