Hamilton will be a hot topic all offseason. (US Presswire)

Relief pitcher Mike Adams and outfielder Josh Hamilton are both free agents, so they aren't technically teammates anymore. Still, they were teammates for the past season and a half (give or take a few games) on the Texas Rangers, so it was a bit surprising to hear Adams' comments about Hamilton on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday.

"Sometimes Josh is hard to figure out," Adams said at one point (MLB Network Radio). And then later: "I'm not sure if it's in the best interest of the Texas Rangers or not."

This might set off some slight overreactions, but Adams usually seems fair and -- in this case -- doesn't come off as much different.

From where I sit, Hamilton is tough to figure out. He looked like the best player in baseball for stretches this past season, but he also looked pretty bad in stretches (including a major defensive gaffe). There was also was the alcohol relapse within the past year, quitting smokeless tobacco (which Hamilton said contributed to his midseason slump) and his lingering late-season sickness. Considering Hamilton's troubled past, it's fair to raise questions before signing him to a nine-figure contract and assuming only good will follow.

And let's also point out that it's not like Adams bashed Hamilton. He just said Hamilton is hard to figure out, and I think even Hamilton himself probably wouldn't take exeption to that.

With all we know about Hamilton, his free agency case is easily going to be the most interesting this offseason.
