The Diamondbacks edged the Dodgers 3-1 in 10 innings (box score) on Tuesday night, and in doing so won their 12th game in a row (and fifth straight over L.A.). That 12-game win streak isn't even the longest in the majors at the moment -- the Indians won their 13th in a row Tuesday -- but the D-Backs are closing in on a related bit of history.

Specifically, Arizona hasn't trailed in a game since the Giants went up on them 1-0 in the second inning on Aug. 25. That means it has been 98 consecutive innings since the Diamondbacks were behind on the scoreboard. Now for some necessary context ...

So if the Snakes can avoid falling behind the Dodgers for the first five innings Wednesday night, they'll set the all-time record.

As for their current win streak, it has helped them solidify their hold on the top NL wild-card spot. As of Monday, our friends at SportsLine gave the D-Backs a 94.2 percent chance of making the postseason, so they're getting to be in "mortal lock" territory. Not bad for a team that lost 93 games a season ago.

No, Arizona almost certainly isn't going to catch the Dodgers in the NL West, but their recent run has helped undermine whatever illusions of inevitability there were surrounding the boys in blue. Now the D-Backs have a shot at making history at the expense of the team that not so long ago was lording over all of baseball. Even if they come up short, it has already been a history-making week for Arizona.
