The White Sox are coming off a busy winter. General manager Rick Hahn lassoed Todd Frazier from the Reds, stole Brett Lawrie from the Athletics, bought low on Mat Latos and Austin Jackson, and even added some veteran reinforcements up the middle, in Dioner Navarro, Jimmy Rollins, and Alex Avila. Those pieces, added to a quality core, means there’s reason for excitement on the south side.
Fortunately, the White Sox have ensured that everyone in attendance at U.S. Cellular Field will get a good look at the action on the field thanks to some in-stadium upgrades. Here’s the juice, courtesy of Mallory Busch of the Chicago Tribune:
The White Sox plan to unveil an array of new digital boards this spring -- including a massive primary board in center field complete with digital pinwheels. The new video board vaults the Sox from second to last in terms of size (the old board was 1,484 square feet and was installed in 2003), to No. 7, with a size of around 8,000 square feet. For comparison the left field board installed by the Cubs last year is nearly 4,000 square feet.
The Tribune's story is also worth checking out for their neat, interactive infographic. You can compare each team’s primary video board across the league by age or size, and you can even see how they stack up against the biggest in the sport -- the new one installed this winter at the Indians' Progressive Field.
Speaking of the Indians, while the White Sox’ new primary video board will be the seventh-largest in the majors, it’ll check in as just the third-largest in the American League Central. White Sox fans will have to hope the team fares better in the standings.
