The Yankees" data-canon="New York Mets" data-type="SPORTS_OBJECT_TEAM" id="shortcode0"> have claimed right-handed pitcher David Herndon and left-handed pitcher Josh Spence off waivers, the team announced Tuesday.
Herndon, who was just claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays in late October, is recovering from Tommy John surgery after pitching in five games for the Phillies in 2012. He has a 3.85 career ERA and 1.48 career WHIP in 117 innings at the major-league level.
Spence, a 24-year-old reliever born in Australia, made 11 appearances for the Padres last season, going 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 10 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. He was much more effective the previous year, posting a 2.73 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings in 2011.
