Youth baseball tournament held in Missouri despite coronavirus pandemic
An estimated 550 kids took part in the tournament outside of St. Louis
The coronavirus pandemic has halted the majority of sports on all levels over the last two months. It's even led to the cancellation of the Little League World Series. However, that isn't stoping one youth sports league in Missouri. According to USA Today, an estimated 550 kids between seven and 14 years old participated in a youth baseball tournament outside of St. Louis over the weekend. The games were held at two separate locations.
While play did return, social distancing rules were in places for the games. Umpires were required to call balls and strikes from six feet behind the pitcher and there were only three players allowed in each dugout at a time. GameTime Tournaments, who ran the weekend's tournament, believed that all parties involved did an "outstanding job."
"If they wouldn't have, we could've looked really bad," GameTime Tournaments owner Rob Worstenholm said. "But it turned out to be just the opposite. It turned out fantastic. Everybody followed the rules. And it was a beautiful thing."
The "Mother's Day Classic" tournament had 47 teams participating and came after Missouri entered the first phase of its "Show Me Strong Recovery Plan."
Worstenholm believed the tournament could be used as "(proof) to everybody here in St. Louis that this can be done safely." The GameTime Tournaments is also finalizing details to hold another youth baseball tournament that would take place later in May.
While the youth tournament was held without issues, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institutes for Health since 1984, detailed on Monday why pro sports returning is still going to be an uphill battle.
